yes the 4870 is better, as for the temps i dont remember exactly, but like all ATI cards it must be pretty high ..
nice, but i dont want high temps, but i hear new ati cards run cooler than the nvidia ones. BTW than if the 4870 is better than the 9800 GTX, Does the 4850 run better than the 9800 GTX also? I want to get cheap as possible.
the new ATI cards still have overheating issues ...

but either way from what i rememebr with my old ati card, a simple program called atitools can increase fan speed, and u dont even need to increase it that much for the 4870 becasue its stock setting is so low(i think less that 20%)and like a 20-30% increase will make a huge difference, and the cooling system on the 4870's are actually pretty nice, its just that stock fan speed pretty much make it a waste

some games 4870 wins by small or alot, some games their about the same, some games 3870x2 win by small margin

u also have to count in the microstuttering that occurs with these x2 cards, not exactly sure how bad it is with the 3870x2, but i sure theres some

and count in the power consumption, dont know exact consumption, but i do know 3870x2 eats up more

TC's best bet is certainly the 4870

EDIT: also the 4850 is a bit better than the 9800gtx and about equal with the 9800gtx+.
