Building a $500 Budget Gaming PC

Hey guys, I used to build PCs for a period of about 5-6 years, but it's been about 2 since I've built a PC. My roomate wants a new gaming PC on the cheap.. budget = $500. Were poor college students these days :/ Anyway he doesn't need a case, monitor, keyboard, mouse, or speakers. Just the essentials.Like I said I haven't kept up on the latest and greatest so help would be useful. I know DDR3 is out, but don't know much about it. Do people still go with 7200 RPM SATA drives? Whats the best video card for this budget? I was an AMD guy back in the day, but I hear Intel has the edge now? Quad or dual? Vista or XP? Etc. Help please! Thanks. Building a $500 Budget Gaming PC
I don't know much, but I'm gonna say to get a GeForce 8800, 2-3GB of DDR2 RAM, a Dual-Core CPU and Windows XP.Building a $500 Budget Gaming PC
A Core 2 Duo is the way to go for gaming. You should have atleast 2GB of RAM for XP, and 4GB for Vista. The 8800 series is solid, a 8000GT can max out most games, besides Crysis. The high-end cards are probably the 4850/4870 or GTX 260/280, also 4870x2. We still use those Hard Drives you mentioned. For a motherboard, look for a P45, or P35 if you're looking for a cheaper motherboard. P45 is mroe future-proof aswell. DDR3 RAM is not a significant upgrade from DDR2, it's pretty much the same, go for DDR2.XP or Vista, pick either. Vista is ok now. I hope that cleared things up.
CPU: C2D E8400 - $170 I believe
Motherboard: Something decent quality for $100ish
RAM: 2GB DDR2 RAM for $50ishTotal: $320Now you have $180 left to spend on the best graphics card you can find. There are lots of different motherboard and RAM varieties out there, so if you can find something good in the price ranges I listed (I'm not really up to date with what constitutes a good budget mobo or RAM these days) then you're all set.

If you're starting from scratch with only $500, you need to forget about intel.I picked up anathlon x2 5000 w/heatsink %26 fan - $66 biostar socket am2 mb $30 Sapphics Radeon HD 3850 $ 99 w/ $15 mir.2gb corsair ram $32 160gb wd hdd sata $40random mid tower case $20antect 500w ps with 36Amps on 2 12v rails $40xp home $87 mouse %26 kb $10speakers $4 $428, and completely doable. Since your budget is $500 you could spend $20 more on an x2 5400 black ed and overclock the crap out of it + spend $30 more on an 8800gt. That should bring you around $500.This is definitely doable @ newegg

I hope. and for intel, sure you can make a fairly decent system out of $500. my e7200 seems to hold up great against all the games I play, and even though it is only about 50 dollars cheaper than an e8400, that 50 dollars can help support the motherboard, which can be grabbed cheap enough depending on the future options you want. if you want some crossfire, you're in trouble on that budget, but if you just want a pci-e 2.0 slot, those MB's can be cheap enough. Farrell's PSU will be fine, his setup is fantastic for the price, if you feel like going AMD, but for intel, try this on for sizee7200-$120low price mobo- $60ASUS P5N73-AM LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 7050 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retailsomewhat better mobo, $90BIOSTAR TForce TP43D2A7 LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retailtake everything else from farrell, and you got a build. if you have any money left, it would be well placed in an 8800 of 4850 depending on what you've got left over.
When it comes to the lower end market why do people forget about the E2160 + E2180? They produce less heat, overclock further and perform better than the equivalent AMD CPU (providing you overclock it) and that because it has the exact same architecture as a standard Core2Duo but has a little less cache.
Thanks for the help guys. Some really good stuff here. I keep hearing Crossfire though, but I know nothing about it? Care to shed some light? Thanks again.

[/QUOTE] You pay double the price and get approx 20-70% performance increase depending on what resoltuition you are using! In other words only get it if you have a large monitor or if you have money to waste.

Well intel has the high end all chips all wrapped up, but if you're not spending $150 or more on your cpu than AMD still has a better price/performance ratio.8800gt cards are pretty much the new standard, and will set you back about $200.Anything larger than 2gb of ddr2 memory is sort of a waste performance-wise, but I'd leave some room to grow.

Alright, we've taken advice and deals on newegg into account and we've come up with this:ASUS P5N73-AM LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 7050 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - $60Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 - $170G. Skill (2x2gb) DDR2 800 - $70and a power supply video card combo deal that includes:EVGA GeForce 8800GThec ZEPHYR HEC-750DR-AT 750W together for $245Does all this sound good and in order, and will they all play nice together without a hitch? We're ready to press that ship to button as soon as possible :)
i believe that PSU is way overkill. Honestly with a 8800GT you could prolly go to something as low as 450 or 500 watts, as long as its a good brand. Possibly spending less on your psu will allow you to get a better GPU or mobo.

There are cards that are quite better for just a little more. I never said it was a bad card or that it was ''outdated'', just dated, or could not max games, where are you getting this from?
