External Harddrive help.... expert advice on this question please!!

I need to get an external harddrive to hold the increasing ammount of media on my computer.I am thinking about placing the entire 'documents' folder on the external hardrive, and using my computers internal harddrive just for program files etc. My questions are1. is this a good idea (i cant really just make backups of the info on the external harddrive because i need the space for new things and my internal hdd is almost full)2. If this is a good idea.. can it be done? is there a way that i can just automatically transfer all my documents to the external harddrive and not have my computer keep trying to automatically save things on my c drive3. is a usb 2.0 connection fast enough for what i need to do? i heard that it has a 480 mbps transfer rate or something like that. is it ok for me to just buy for example the western digital essential which only has a usb connection. or do i need to get one of the premium ones for more money that give all these other connections.i dont want to get another internal harddrive because i believe i am going to be getting a new computer in the near future.
I need to get an external harddrive to hold the increasing ammount of media on my computer. I am thinking about placing the entire 'documents' folder on the external hardrive, and using my computers internal harddrive just for program files etc. My questions are1. is this a good idea (i cant really just make backups of the info on the external harddrive because i need the space for new things and my internal hdd is almost full). Kinda; An external drive is not as reliable as an internal one so if your docs are important, I would suggest having a backup on another media also.2. If this is a good idea.. can it be done? is there a way that i can just automatically transfer all my documents to the external harddrive and not have my computer keep trying to automatically save things on my c driveSelect My documents folder in explorer, right-click, select move and pick the new location. Keep in mind that My documents folder is a system folder Windows requires. If you put it under a disk that's not on all the time, you'll run into problems3. is a usb 2.0 connection fast enough for what i need to do? i heard that it has a 480 mbps transfer rate or something like that. is it ok for me to just buy for example the western digital essential which only has a usb connection. or do i need to get one of the premium ones for more money that give all these other connections. No, while not as fast as an internal drive, it's fast enough.i dont want to get another internal harddrive because i believe i am going to be getting a new computer in the near future. I don't see the problem. You can put the internal drive in the new computer once you have it.
