Ive got a few HD videos in .mkv format, but i cant seem to find a suitable codec and playerIm hearing that a certain codec is the best, and its one that you have to pay for, and in junction with Windows Media Classic it works wonders Good HD/.mkv/x264 codec and player
Media player classic or maybe MPC Home Edition or something like that :? There is also VLC.Good HD/.mkv/x264 codec and player
Media player classic or maybe MPC Home Edition or something like that :? There is also VLC.
Ive got Media Player Classic, unfortunately when i try to open my files it just plays the audio, im pretty sure you need to get a codec
When you installed it did you install with ''lots of stuff''? I make sure to check everything when i install it, you might have to go get K Lite codec pack.
When you installed it did you install with ''lots of stuff''? (run this and it will install all the codecs with Classic)http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_Mega_Codec_Pack.htm
Combined Community Codec Pack + CoreAVC = the best there is for .MKV+H264 content. If you don't wanna pay for CoreAVC, the CCCP on its own is fine. It includes a custom build of Media Player Classic as well as ffdshow, Haali's splitter, and it is bar-none the best unified playback solution out there. Don't consider anything else. Seriously.
Ive got Media Player Classic, unfortunately when i try to open my files it just plays the audio, im pretty sure you need to get a codec
Yeah, you need an H264 decoder. The best choices are CoreAVC (fastest H264 decoder there is; takes advantage of multiple cores) and ffdshow (uses libavcodec -- it's slower than CoreAVC, but on the plus side it has more extensive filtering options from what I've seen.) Again, the CCCP comes with ffdshow and a pre-configured build of Media Player Classic. All you have to do is install it, and it'll play Matroska+H264 content flawlessly.
You can also try VLC player.
You can also try VLC player.
VLC is not fun for Matroska content. Last I tried it, it didn't support many Matroska features (chaptering most notably), and I've often come across seeking issues when using VLC with H264 video in the Matroska container.Edit: Just tested the latest build of VLC. I'll retract the statement about chaptering, as it seems to support it now. Still, it doesn't properly support seeking with Matroska+H264 content. The video often freezes, while the audio continues playing. You're much better off using Media Player Classic + ffdshow/CoreAVC.
Okay thanks guys, i tried CoreAVC and have heard its indeed great. Unfortunately the other day i downloaded a Lite compilation of the codecs needed and boom, i got a massive virus the next day. I dont know what it was but i havent ever downloaded anything dodgy. With CoreAVC, with Windows Media Classic i couldnt see the picture

I dont know what it was but i havent ever downloaded anything dodgy.
Most codec packs are the very definition of ''dodgy.'' Not only do they sometimes carry malware, but the vast majority of them are bloated with unnecessary encoders and all kinds of crap you do NOT need. The CCCP is the only exception to this that I've come across, and that's why I so highly recommend it. It installs in its own directory, contains only the necessary decoders, and allows you to play most video content you'll come across. Plus, the build of Media Player Classic (the best video player out there imo) included with it is pre-configured so that you don't have to bother with setting up filters and such.
With CoreAVC, with Windows Media Classic i couldnt see the picture
That's probably because you didn't set Media Player Classic to USE CoreAVC ;) You have to set CoreAVC as MPC's preferred filter for H264 content, otherwise it won't work. That's easy enough to do, though..-With Media Player Classic open: Right ClickViewOptions.-Select ''External Filters''-Click ''Add Filter''-Find and select ''CoreAVC Video Decoder'' -Once it's added to the list of active External Filters, make sure it's set to ''Prefer'', over on the right. Your External Filter settings should look something like this: Press ''OK'', and it should work after that!
