looks fine to me, i would go with the high side on everything you listed. as for the mobo, find the CPU you want on new egg and then look at what other that bought that CPU purchased, it will more than likely give you a couple different motherboards in that list. good luck with your buildFirst Time Build --- Need Help Choosing Parts / Answering Questions
as long as the PSU is modular go for the cheaper onedon't bother with the strap just touch the unpainted part of a radiator before you start and don't wear wooly jumpers or nylongo for the smaller hard drive, RAID0ing later will give you more of a performance boostdon't bother with an aftermarket cooler or thermal compound at the mo'get the 4870pioneer makes the best drives so if that isn't ok then nothing will doget Creative or Logitech speakers, i had some speed links before and the PSU died after a few months
Ok...first time builder here. I'm not sure at all about a setup, which is why I'm turning to you guys to lend a hand. Below I have listed some different parts I'm looking at, with one being more expensive than the other. I can't afford to get all the better parts which is why I need you to help me choose which are worth the extra cost and which I would be fine without. I want to be able to play newer games, such as Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, and Crysis Warhead, and have them look good. I also have a question or two after each part that if you could answer would help me tremendously. Feel free to suggest parts that you think would work better for me as well. OS: Windows Vista 64-bit SP1 ($100) --- Will I have to buy an OS for each system I build in the future?Monitor: 22'' Acer X223Wbd 5ms WS LCD ($195) vs 22'' Samsung 2253BW 2ms WS LCD ($280 - $20 MIR) --- Is the the Samsung enough of an improvement to justify that much extra? I'm willing to spend more on a monitor if it means getting vibrant colors that wow. I had thought about the $500 24'' Samsung T240HD b/c it has the connections to double as a TV so I could hook my XBox 360 up to it. Is there a cable I can get to hook it up to a cheaper monitor? Can both the XBox 360 and PC be hooked up to a monitor at the same time? Will going with a budget brand like Acer make me sacrifice picture quality when using either the PC or XBox 360? Case: Antec Three Hundred ($70) vs Antec Nine Hundred ($140) --- Do both of these have enough room for everything?PSU: Corsair 750TX 750w Power Supply ($130 - $20 MIR - $25 w/ E combo) vs Corsair HEX 620w Power Supply ($160 - $25 MIR) --- Is the HX series that much better than the TX series? PC Tools: Rosewill RTK-002 Anti-Static Wrist Strap ($4) --- Is this needed/recommended to safely build a computer?Surge Protection: Belkin 12-Outlet Surge Protector w/ $300k Connected Equip Warranty ($25) --- Another precaution...MoBo: This is where I have no clue. I don't need 2 PCI-E slots b/c I don't care to go the CrossFire route. I just want a good and reliable motherboard that will OC alright and that is compatible with my other parts. I can't afford to get anything over $150 here, unless I absolutely have to. Would a microATX board work? Or would it not have enough space? HDD: Seagate 250gb 16mb Cache Hard Drive ($60) vs Seagate 640gb 32mb Cache Hard Drive ($85) - I don't use a lot of HDD space so the main difference here for me is the cache size. Will it make any difference with loading times, etc? Is there any reason to go with Western Digital instead? Like does WD have quieter drives or something to make up for the higher prices?CPU: Intel C2D E7200 ($120) vs Intel C2D E8400 ($170) --- Is there a big performance diference?Cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 ($25) vs Xigmatek HDT-S1283 ($35) --- One of these is needed for OCing the CPU, right? Thermal Compound: Arctic Silver 5 ($6) --- This is needed for getting and aftermarket cooler, right? GPU: VisonTek Radeon HD 4850 ($185 - $20 MIR) vs VisonTek Radeon HD 4870 ($260) --- Is there a big performance difference?RAM: Corsair 4gb (2 x 2gb) DDR2-800 ($84 - $20 MIR) --- Good choice? I think I'm good with these but could be wrong, I guess.Optical Drive: Pioneer 20X DVD+R DVD-ROM Drive ($30) --- I think this should work for my needs as long is it isn't too loud...the computer is going to be in my room. I have a mouse and will probably get a $10 keyboard from Circuit City. Where might I look for a good 2.1 speaker system under $50? Oh and if you could recommend your favorite PC game to play I might just pick that up as well. Thank you so much to anyone that responds!
OS...yes Vista x64 is the right choice because 1) since SP-1, it has corrected many issues with stability and performance and 2) 64-bit OS needed to fully optimize 4GB of memory. I assume your buying the OEM version which is for system builders and means it can be installed only once in one computer (though you might be able to contact MS and get their approval to do so), where a retail version can be re-installed to different computers.Monitor....The 22'' Samsung is the better monitor for sure. I don't own either (have a LG 20.1 Widescreen, very nice) but from reviews on those two, they are generally good to very good. If your budget is tight, the Acer will serve you needs well...but if you can afford the extra cash, the Samsung will most diffinetly give you better performance. Going to a 24'' monitor will have an effect on which GPU to selcet, since it will allow you to run your display at a higher resolution that a 22'' monitor. The Antec 900 is an excellent case and worth the extra if you look to be doing a lot of intensive gaming....it's a very popular choice of many gamers. You mentioned you were not looking to go the crossfire route, so a Mid-size Tower should serve you well....going to a full size tower would be wise if your looking to add that 2nd Gpu for crossfire or SLi. The 900 is one of the better cases for keeping your system cool(though it does collect a lot of dust and needs to be cleaned out on a regular basis and can be quite loud with all the fans)....another suggestion would be the...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146047 PC tools %26 surge protection.....I'm a first time builder too...just finished mie a few weeks ago and using an anti-static wristband was comforting to me.....a lot of very experienced builders may or may not tell you it's necessary, but like for me it helped.....As for a surge protector, I feel it's a must have tool. I had a power surge a few years back and my Belkin SP pretty much saved my system...the PSU blew out but all the other components were saved. Belkin also paid for the replacement of the damaged parts.....nice !Motherboard....my recommendation for being able to get good OCing and having the option og crossfire if you decide later on down the road.....and stay within your price range.http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16813131299 HHD....the 32mb of cache are nice...but I don't think you see it affect your performance much....The Seagate's seem to be overall good and the price's are good. I just bought 2 WD SE16 640GB HHD's priced at 85 dollars each on Newegg and must say I love them. I have a WD 150GB Raptor in my ither system and these 640's run just as fast and are dear silent.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136218 CPU....for the extra 50 dollars go with the E8400...much more OC'ing room...or if you can step up a little more The E8500. With the 8400 or 8500 you have the higher FSB at 1333MHz and the increased L2 Cache at 6MB. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115036 Cooling heatsink and thermal compound.....Both very good...AC7 is a favorite CPU heatsink choice because it does a good job for the price and AS 5...is always a must to help keep your CPU temps down (though there is a curing process of something like a hundred hrs before AS 5 finally takes hold, from what I read about it)GPU....You choices come dow to budget.....both are excellent (I went with an ASUS HD4870 with my system build) The 4870 will give you more performance, especially at higher monitor resolutions and will requier more power. But the 4780 is a duel slot card which will take up 2 slots on your MB as opposed to the 4850 which is a single slot card. The 4870 will move it's hot air out the back of your case while the 4850 blows it inside the case (though if you go with the Antec 900 of a similar case that cools very well, heat should not be an issue with either card)RAM....it will depend on your Motherboard whether it supports the type of memory you select...The memory you chose looks good..lots of good reviews, nice price/performance value.....whatever MB you decide on, check to see what kind of memory it supports, you may be able to go to a little bit faster speeds such as DDR2 1066 PC-2 8500 for just a bit more in cost...Optical drive looks good...i Bought a Pioneer a while back and it rund very well...try to select one that runs with a SATA cable connection. They are less hassel that using dirves with an IDE ribbon connection and a bit faster.Keyboards....you don't have to spend a lot like the G-15 or G-11. they are very nice but un less you feel a need for having a top of the line gaming keyboard...not necessary. I would suggest getting something with a better value such as....http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE%26N=2010290063%2050002000%204025%26name=Saitek Speakers......It's just a matter of shopping around and compairing....any suggestions I listed are IMO only and don't necessarly need to be purchased off of NewEgg...though Newegg is a great place to shop for most hardware parts....hope this was some help...good luck !.....8)http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16836121010http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836116024*+
And your PSU....sorry I forgot that, it's the most important item in your system. The 620HX is the much better value, even though it is lower wattage and a bit higher price, it's the Amps suppling power to the 12v rails that make a big difference in producing solid, steady and clean power under all load conditions. And it's modular, which is the way to go with power supplies. You'll only use the cables needed to connect to your hardware so you don't have all those unused cables cluttering up the works inside your case....I would definitely go for the 620......*+
