So,Im gunna build a new rig soon.Im gunna use it for gaming, and cpu speed is pretty important, but i would like to oveclock, and i have heard the Q6600 is good for overclocking. My budget is 800-1000 dollars,i can go maybe 50 dollars above that but thats about all.I want a good case for sure,Hopefully supporting atleast 6 fans.I dont really care much about looks of the case but w/e not plain old cases tho. Can somone just try to put all the parts i want together in like a list with links,so like all the stuff i need to buy and everything so its easier so i dont have to go looking for stuff or forget stuff. Please use either ncix.com or tigerdirect.ca Just for the canadian pricing. so essentialy put all the parts you think i should get in a list with links and canadian pricing and stuff.Building a rig.
antec makes good cases heres a link for a few of em http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE%26DEPA=0%26Description=antec+case im getting one in a month or so cant wat :)Building a rig.
Bump.
for gaming get a e8400 as it eats the q6600 alive when it come to gaming. the only reason to get a quad is if your doing lots of video editing but for basicly everything else a faster dual beats a slower quad.the 8800gt is a great cheap gpu or there is the great hd 4870get 2gb ram or 4gb if it fits your buget640gb hdd is the current sweet spot, I would go anything below 400gb now as games low like 10gb eachsince your on a buget a p45 based mob is a great peformance/price boardhere is a list of the main partsTSD-750AS:: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB Hard Drive - 7200, 16MB, Serial ATA-300, OEM (1lbs) O261-8038:: OCZ SLI-Ready Dual Channel 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory (2x2048MB) (0.3lbs)P450-8830:: XFX GeForce 8800 GT Video Card - Alpha Dog Edition, 512MB DDR3, PCI Express 2.0, SLI Ready, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV, Variable Fan Speed (1.7lbs)A455-2824:: Asus P5Q Green Motherboard - Intel P45, Socket 775, ATX, Audio, PCI Express 2.0, S/PDIF, Gigabit LAN, Firewire, USB 2.0, SATA, RAID (2.95lbs)CP1-DUO-E8400:: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Processor BX80570E8400 - 3.0GHz, 6MB Cache, 1333MHz FSB, Wolfdale, Dual-Core, Retail, Socket 775, Processor with Fan (0.6lbs)A406-1087:: XION Simple Power 630W ATX Power Supply (3.85lbs) L12-1142 OEM:: Lite-On DH-20A4P-04 SuperAllwrite OEM DVD Burner - 20x DVD盧 Burn, 16x DVD盧 Read, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 8x DVD盧 DL, 12x DVD-RAM, 48x32x CD-R/RW, PATA, Black (2.1lbs) im not sure about cases, but in my experence basicly any cheap atx case is perfectly fine TC3J-4512:: Power Up ATX Mid-Tower Case - Black, Front USB (10.4lbs) you could get this faster gpu if buget allowsV261-4870:: Visiontek Radeon HD 4870 Video Card - 512MB GDDR5, PCI Express 2.0 x16, CrossFireX Ready, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV, HDMI Support, VGA Support (2.45lbs) hope it helps. you may also need windows. I'd suggest getting vista x64 so you can use all 4gb
thanks.
Would a 3ghz Quad core proform better? Im gonna be getting a quad core soon for gaming im thinking of the intel 3.0ghz modelIs this wise or am im failing?

Depends on the app, what quad-core you're talking about, and what you're comparing it to.
If you mean a Q6600 or some other 65nm Kentsfield overclocked to 3.0 GHz, then it won't perform as good as an E8400 or a Q9650 at that same clock speed since the latter two are 45nm Penryn chips that perform faster clock-for-clock, as well as having SSE4 and running much cooler.
If you mean a Q9650, then that could probably hit 4.0 GHz or better if cooled adequately, after which most duals won't have a significant advantage. Of course, the catch here is that you're paying a lot more for that quad than a dual, and you'll also need to pay up a bit more for an HSF or other means of cooling that will let you attain that overclock without overheating the CPU with the Vcore levels needed for stability. Sure, there are much cheaper quads than the Q9650, but you'd be lucky to hit 3.6 GHz or so with one either because the multiplier is pathetically low or because it's a 65nm chip that runs much hotter.
Furthermore, it depends on what apps you're using. Those that can actually make use of quads will probably be dramatically faster than those that can only use duals, but most apps don't, and with those apps, the CPU with the higher clock speed will perform better.
Finally, if you intend to run multiple apps that need lots of CPU power, a dual-core can become stressed beyond its capacity and slow everything down since it only has so much CPU power to spare, while a quad-core could easily run a game that uses two cores at the most while you perform music or video encoding in the background with the remaining cores.

[/QUOTE] the wolfdales are faster per clock than the corones but if its a 45nm dual and 45nm quad the quad will bit a tiny bit faster in games but nothing much since games don't support quad cores very well, but a 3ghz e8400 beats a q6600 @ 3ghz in games, since its newer and more advanced
If I was you I would buy my stuff off of Mwave.com Thats what I found have the cheapest prices. I bought all my stuff at computer plus (a local store) which had cheaper prices than that though.
